It is assumed that the Humane Society needs the financial support of the community. What is not well known is the fact that we need volunteers to help us with many of our activities. Listed below are several areas in which we need your help. Please take time to review them and let us know what you can do to help the animals.

Office Work

Our administrative offices are located in the City of Fairfax across from the Fairfax County Courthouse buildings. Help is needed in the following areas:

Thrift StoreOur two thrift stores provide a fun opportunity to meet our donors and other volunteers. A typical day includes greeting donors, stocking the shelves, pricing, organizing, and selling items. The best part is that you get first dibs at buying neat things at bargain prices. The volunteer discount is a nice bonus as well!

Time commitment: One shift per week required
Store hours: Monday through Saturday 10:00am – 4:00pm (Second Chance 2)
Monday through Friday 10:00am – 4:00pm, Saturday 10:00am – 3:00pm (Second Chance)

Neighborhood Collections

Farm and Kennel Support

Our farm is located in Centreville and it is here that we house our amazing horses and fun-loving dogs. The farm can always use volunteers to help muck stalls and generally keep up the property, help clean kennels and socialize with the dogs.

Fundraising

Working our booths at craft fairs and other events is a tremendous help to us!

Humane Education

Volunteers can visit area schools, scout troops, women's groups, rotary organziations and respond to other requests for speakers to discuss animal care and the HSFC as an organization.

Cat and Small Mammal Socializers

We always need warm-hearted volunteers to spend time with our cats and small mammals in Fairfax, enhancing their social skills, which ultimately makes them more adoptable!

Adoption Visitors (Pre-Adoption and Follow-up)

Volunteers are needed to visit potential adopters' residences, review the location, offer suggestions to make the animal feel most comfortable, etc. Similarly, we need people willing to visit the animals and their new families after adoption to ensure everyone is happy and thriving.

There is just so much to do! And volunteering your time truly is a rewarding experience. And it is FUN
